For the losers

It is hard to lose.

I have been close enough to a few contests across the years that I know how gut-wrenching it is to weather defeat in an election. Particularly if, like George Dale, you have been in office a while. Man, inside he is weeping. Alone in a room, probably outside, too.

Charlie Ross yesterday mustered, by sheer will, a "We are team!" response to defeat with Phil Bryant, Lt. Gov. Tuck and Gov. Haley Barbour looking on. It may seem a natural thing to do, but as Phil Bryant said yesterday on the radio, that is a very difficult thing to do. Hats off to Charlie for being so graceful in defeat. My favorite line of Ross' was something like "The providence of God has shone through the vote of the people. I accept their wisdom tonight." Nice.

If you enter into politics, you must eventually figure out how to handle defeat. And never say "It is not personal." I heard a bunch of people try with with Ray Mabus when he was thumped by Gov. Fordice. Getting whupped at the voter's booth is the most personal thing of all.

Kudos to all who ran. It is what makes America great. And we weep with you today.

Charlie Ross deserved to lose for that sorry comment he made about Bryant giving money to a "black" legislative caucus. It got tight on him and he resorted to what he felt comfortable doing and it let people know some things that are inside. If he was such a great guy, he would not have resorted to appealing to the racist element in MS.

Agreed Mr. Matt…It is indeed one of the greatest things about America that we the people choose who is in power in our government. What visionaries the founding fathers where to build this nation on the idea of a government being by the people and for the people; and the main point being to limit the power and size of this government!

By the way…Great show Monday with Gov. Barbour…man, you hard balled a couple right over the plate! It was very interesting to here his explanation of how gambling is not a sin if it’s only recreational and not done in excess. I think it is immoral and a sin on any level…even buying chances on an ATV or something like; seems the same to me as buying lottery tickets. I will usually just donate the money if it is for a good cause.
Oh well, later man…keep up the good work.

Barbour is a politician and knows how to stroke his base, but he also knows that regardless of how moral his Democratic challenger may or may not be, most of his base will never vote for him. Barbour is about that money. I guarantee you that if somehow a big money maker on abortion came up, he would lean in that direction just like he did with gambling. After it is all said an done, party, not politics is most important to most voters. Mississippi is still stuck in that good ole boy mentality.
