Conservatism needs to find a definition that matches the expressed practices. Argue as you may, Conservatives are not providing smaller government, just focusing money in different areas. Once people see that, they opt for politicians that try to make the government work for them as opposed to working for corporations. People use to buy into the idea of trickle down economics and that some politicians want smaller government. That was until people see what happens when companies like Exxon Mobile get tax breaks while making record profits while folks struggle to buy gas. Republicans lead by Conservatives had both houses of Congress and the Presidency and the government grew as usual., maybe even larger than normal, while going deeper into debt.

Republicans, lead by people that CLAIMED to be conservative, had both houses. Conservatives have not been in charge of the Republican party for quite some time. Bush, while I applaud many of the things he has done, is not a true Conservative. If McCain gets the nomination, I would not be surprised to see Conservatives go back to the basics and truly try to reduce the size of govt.

Larry, if that is the case, Reagan was not really Reagan. Even he raised taxes, proposed amnesty for illegals and pulled us out of Beirut when it was obvious it was not going to work. Alot of the things conservatives bash people over the head with were done by the one that you all claim to be the ultimate standard.
