And that, boys and girls, is why Reagan was the greatest US president ever.

Yes.

Absolutely.....NOT! Announcing his candidacy in Philadelphia, MS and supporting Bob Jones University inspite of their stance on inter-racial dating excludes him from being the greatest President. Those were probably minor issues to some, but it was a wink wink to a very ugly element still present in the United States. By him going out of his way to insult minorities, he is precluded from being recognized as great by some. If he did not do those things, that is one thing. If he did, he should be held accountable.

Larry, I take it that you find the instances that I mentioned acceptable. Well, its not acceptable to me and its a minor representation on why the country is split on so many things. When it comes to things that all folks should be able to denounce, we won't.

I do not understand the significance of announcing his candidacy in Philadelphia, so I cannot comment on that. I must plead ignorance. As far as Bob Jones University, I think it is a great school that turns out some quality educated people and 1 pastor that I have known personally. As far as the stance on inter-racial dating, I do not agree with it, but that one issue will not get me to condemn an otherwise fine institution.
I think that President Reagan was one of the best that we have had and definitely the best in my lifetime (41 y.o.)
The question I have is should I withdraw my support and condemn any person or institution because of a disagreement on one issue of personal opinion?

Larry, I doubt that the significance of Philadelphia did not escape Reagan. I am sure someone informed him that it was the site of the three Civil Rights workers that were slain. And I would also bet he knew what message announcing there would send. As for Bob Jones, maybe it is a great university now. But Reagan supported them when they were being restricted because of their position on interacial marriage. That was a choice, not a need. One should never choose to be on the side of wrong. Those things have meaning to some people. Maybe not you, but to some. If he had chosen to announce at an abortion clinic or support an abortion clinic, this crowd would understand African American's reluctance to rank Reagan highly.

Whomever a person says is the greatest is just an opinion. People should be praised for the good things they do and the questionable to wrong things they do should not be overlooked. We should give people an honest look, the good and the bad. Not just try to create who we wanted them to be. From my perspective Abraham Lincoln made the hardest decision this country has faced and for choosing correctly, he is the greatest.

I am not sure, but it seems to me the logical reason he announced in Philadelphia was to secure the "Solid South." He could have chosen any southern town and the odds are that civil rights and liberties (even lives)were trounced there. The announcement came at the Neshoba County Fair. That is the biggest political event in the state of Mississippi.
Many people have kicked off their campaign at that venue, both Republican and Democrat.
That is quite a leap to compare an anti-interacial dating policy with the murderous industry of abortion.
For the record, my sister married inter-racially and has a son by that marriage, so this is a matter of great significance to me.
I try take the totality of person's
or institution's work to make my judgement as to whether I support, endorse, or condemn them. His true
legacy is one of fighting oppression in the world, helping bring an end to the Cold War, and basically giving Americans something to fight for and believe
in. I, therefore, restate my original post, Put Ron on the Rock!!!!

Larry, I am just giving you my perspective. What is important to me, may not be important to you. This push to claim Reagan was so great is recent. During his Presidency, he was not the most beloved guy. He may be the Conservatives' Hero, but not where I come from. Just like Kentucky Basketball fans loved Rupp. Or how people today admired General Robert E. Lee. There are always going to be people that some are willing to admire dispute of or because things that are totally unacceptable to others. Maybe you want Reagan on Mount Rushmore in the same way some folks thought it was a good idea to have a Confederate Memorial Day tied to Martin Luther King Day, if I am not mistaken.

We keep getting the comparison of one thing and another that is usually a racial issue. What do Reagan and Confederate Memorial Day have in common? NOTHING. Please find an issue other than racial disharmony to harp on. The United States, including Mississippi, are moving forward on race relations. Maybe you should also.
I am leaving for the day and will not be able to post or read any more until tomorrow.
I think that you and I would actually get along in person Mr(s) Edney. God bless you and have a wonderful day. Bye.

Larry, I never said that we would not get along. I do not see why we would not. But if you have an issue that is important to you, I am sure you have your reasons. I respect that. But it seems as if you do not respect me having that same right. My parents experienced a lot of hardship and disrespect for the simple fact they were black. It is easy for someone who has never experienced something to tell someone who has to get over it. I did not ask nor expect you to change your opinion of Ronald Reagan. I simply said that he would not be rated highly on my board because... The connection between Ronald Reagen and Confederate Memorial Day and that type of thing is that some people do not think actions mean anything. If you condone something, it means something. If you celebrate something, it means something. Its my opinion and my opinion only, but Reagan seemed to pander to that ugly element in society that longs for things to be like they were. Moving forward is not a solution. Driving past a wreck never helped anyone. Lets just agree to disagree. Its just odd to me that the only people that are asked not to relate the past to the present are blacks. We all agree the guy in Iran not recognizing the Holocaust is wrong. Should Jews move on? How is that we can hold him accountable for not respecting atrocities of Jewish history and you think I am nuts for holding Reagan accountable for some of his actions? I think I have that right.

I will leave conservatives with this. You know why we should not "get over" this race thing? Because its a problem. Edgar Killens was convicted of manslaughter, not murder, but manslaughter. In his defense, a former Mayor of Philadelphia(1997), said that the KKK was a peaceful, good organization. For appealing to that crowd with his talk of "states rights", Reagan restricted himself from being great.

Matt, I'm surprised that you posted this link on your website with the Reagan cartoon. Do you not see the other ads on it? You may have a family filter and don't see the nudity ads on the right side, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
