Vote for Haley?

No. And the reason is...like Trent Lott and others, these guys think they can "roll" the Christian community on their issues like gambling (Barbour and Lott) and embryonic stem cell research (Lott) with no repurcussions.

They are right. But not with my one little vote. Not for Haley. Not this time.

Barbour is about that money. Before he got elected, I said that people should be weary of a man that would lobby for things that he personally claims to be against.

What exactly has Barbour done in relation to gambling that you view as being so bad?

He supported legislation after Katrina that allowed the casinos to build 800 feet off the coast. 800 feet. That is a little over two football fields. Is it really that big of a deal?

Also, what makes you think that Barbour is for some reason bound to the view points of people like yourself. Is it because you voted for him? I voted for him too. Is it because your a citizen of Mississippi? So am I. He is my governor as much as his yours.

IF it really was no big deal, they would have been content staying out in the Gulf. Its was an incremental move that allows the casinos a deeper foothold in MS. I was on the coast for three days last month. It was ridiculous to see how much had not been done and to see the casinos up and running. The fact that people can gamble in the midst of all that rubble speaks volumes.

"IF it really was no big deal, they would have been content staying out in the Gulf."

Use your brain for a minute. Being able to build 800 feet inland and elevate the structure, as opposed to having it floating on the water, can prevent millions of dollars in damage should another storm hit the area.

On the other hand, 800 feet does not make that much difference in terms of the expansion of gambling in Mississippi. We are talking about 800 feet. I can spit farther than that. You talk as if this would allow casinos to spring up from one end of the state to the other.

It made good business sense to allow it. Haley Barbour knew it, that's why he supported it. He did what was best for the coast. He did his job....

I will not be voting for Haley Barber in this next election. I've always thought he was a shady person, and over these last four years he has only proved that to be true. This man has for years been selling out to the highest bidder, and this time around it happens to be the casino companies. Anyone, who would defend his actions, must have a love for casinos and what they bring with them.

Annonymous #1,
Use my brain for a minute? If you think the decision was solely for safety reasons, you should withhold that advice until further notice. I did not vote for Barbour and do not plan to. I had my feelings about him from the beginning. Matt's point is that he seems to be the type of politician that will cozy up to a constituency, go against some of their main principles and dare them not to support him the next time. Good business? It may be good business for a woman to prostitute herself, but it is surely not what is best for her. And lastly, if you can spit 800 feet, you should contact Guiness Book of World Records.

And my point is that allowing the casinos to build 800 feet inland is not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. It will not change the fact that gambling is legal in Mississippi, but limited to a very small area.

If Haley is as big of a sellout that you are making him out to be, why did the casino industry not use him to get gambling expanded across the entire state, as opposed to a trivial 800 feet?

Yeah, it makes good business sense (in terms of risk) to build a multi-million dollar building that is prone to flooding at the highest point possible.

If you oppose gambling, that is your right to do so. Being able to have an opinion and voice it is what makes this country great.

If you oppose Haley, that is your right to do so. I think throwing him under the bus over 800 feet is silly, though. Just my opinion.

I was listening to Mr Ron Meyers.
He said he was not against OR for the decision of Gov Barbour to allow the casinos to move inland.

One verse
Revelation 3:16
'So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.

I hope his discussion with Matt has challenged him to seriously listen to the words that came out of mouth.

Check Your Brain Meters! It is running low people!
Barbour has made his decision for the casinos and not what is best for Mississippi! I say send the casinos out further in the gulf(without people inside) and let the next hurricane take them out to sea! They do not help hard working families no matter how much they cry they do! Families are destroyed and children are the greatest sacrifice! Ask yourself are the supposed revenues really helping Mississippians or hurting us! Wake up and see the truth!

If the Evangelical Christian community is serious about gambling as a moral issue, then they should make a big issue out of NOT voting for Barbour.

What about his opposition to CHIPS? Could it be that he's REALLY opposed to the 61 cent a pack tax on tobacco?

I won't be voting for him again and urge others not to vote for him either.

I pray that Christians can recognize the need for each individual to seek God and to pray for His wisdom in all these matters.
Men can make persuasive arguments and can tout their own righteous as a justification for them. However, Jesus Christ is the only cure for sin. And it is His grace that saved each of us. We are called to "preach the Gospel to every creature." We are all subject to the temptation of sin. If you resist the sin of gambling then thank Jesus Christ for that. But if someone has fallen to that temptation then let's have the love of Jesus in us for him and preach the Gospel, "Good News" to him. He can be set free, casinos or no casinos.
In the Garden of Eden there were no Casinos, no drugs, no alcohol, no cigarettes. Adam could not have looked on another woman and Eve could not have been unfaithful to Adam...and yet sin entered in. My dear Christian brothers and sisters, sin is in the hearts of men and women.
Mormons are moral and ethical people. They do not know Jesus Christ as a personal Savior and do not have the benefit of His cleansing blood. Yet they appear "righteous." Let us not strive to "establish our own righteousness while we neglect the righteousness that is of God." Casinos are here, crime is here, pornography is here, drugs are here and so is prostitution, child abuse and all manner of evil. Is the cure to blame sinners? No the Bible says, "If my people, who are called by my name will HUMBLE THEMSELVES and pray and turn from THEIR WICKED WAYS..." God's people are to bear the responsibiltity. It is our failure. We are to be a light in the darkness. We are not called to point out the sins or errors of others, while we cast ourselves as judge of the motives of others. Only God knows the heart. We are called to submit ourselves to God and to reach out to the lost. People gamble to fill a void in their life. My question is with all the "righteous" Christians in Mississippi, why do so many people feel a void inside?
Maybe the Christians must return to their first love. Maybe they need to be preaching the Gospel which sets people free from sin and cleanses them from all unrighteousnes. My salvation was paid for by Jesus Christ when He shed his blood for me.
Haley Barbour, the Casinos, sin, death cannot take it away. But neither can removing any of those things save one lost soul.
We must stop expecting politicians to do the work that we won't do ourselves and that is to reach out with the love of Jesus Christ to those He died to save.
I appreciate Ron Meyers for his comments to consider the issue from the viewpoint of many on the Coast who suffered through Katrina, who helped our neighbors in love even if they did work at a casino. I don't want the ones I witnessed to think that I would rejoice if they lost their jobs and their homes. And many of them, yes many "sinners" also help me and other Christians on the Coast. And they did not hold our religion against us. People are won to Jesus when we demonstrate His love, His compassion and His forgiveness. Not when we demonstrate our own "righteousness" which Jesus says is as "filthy rags".

I will vote for Haley Barbour.
I will depend on Jesus Christ to save sinners and I will preach the Gospel, in love, to those who need to be set free from sin.
Thank you and God bless and keep the Body of Christ in peace.

...and the alternative is? Do we really want a trial lawyer as governor? Do we really want a pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage party member as governor? Eaves can say what he wants, but he is backed by the democratic party that supports these issues.

Look at President Bush: I don't agree with a lot of his policies, or lack of policies, but he has done some important things (Supreme court nominees) that I doubt a democratic President would have done. Therefore, given my choices in 2004 (two of them), I picked the candidate that would do the less damage overall.

So, will I vote for Barbour? Yes I will. I will again vote for the candidate that will do the less damage overall.

Don't let your anger and pride override your common sense on this issue!

I want to see the abortion clinic closed in Jackson, the strip clubs closed in Jackson, Sometimes Matt, you cannot see the forest through the trees! Wake up and smell the sin! It's everywhere, not just on the Gulf Coast.

I used to live next door to Mr. Eaves. Don't be fooled by his "Christian" talk. In the last presidential election, he had a "John Kerry" sticker on his black hummer. Who do you think he will be supporting for President this year? He is just using his Christian talk to appeal to the conservative vote, to get it, and then implement his usual Democratic ways. You can't use the gambling issue as the ONLY basis for this election. You have to look at the whole picture. And if John Arthur Eaves is so pro-life, why is he such a supporter of John Kerry and the like who certainly are not. I used to think highly of Matt Friedman and his political opinion, but he is dead wrong on this one and will be sorely embarrassed in the end with his public support of John Arthur Eaves!
