Repeal Day?

Tomorrow is Repeal Day! And in celebration, this quote from William Bennett:
"One of the clear lessons of Prohibition is that when we had laws against alcohol, there was less consumption of alcohol, less alcohol-related disease, fewer drunken brawls, and a lot less public drunkenness. And contrary to myth, there is no evidence that Prohibition caused big increases in crime. (The De-Valuing of America)

And just to be fair and balanced, a quote from an economist who writes for the CATO Institute..

"Although consumption of alcohol fell at the beginning of Prohibition, it subsequently increased. Alcohol became more dangerous to consume; crime increased and became "organized"; the court and prison systems were stretched to the breaking point; and corruption of public officials was rampant. No measurable gains were made in productivity or reduced absenteeism. Prohibition removed a significant source of tax revenue and greatly increased government spending. It led many drinkers to switch to opium, marijuana, patent medicines, cocaine, and other dangerous substances that they would have been unlikely to encounter in the absence of Prohibition."

Prohibition was a complete and total failure. It caused more problems than it prevented.

Its pretty hard to say that prohibition did not have something to do with an increase in crime. Mobs basically exploded because of it. Illegal booze made Al Capone the gangster he became known as. The interesting part of that assuming is that even though there is not a prohibition on alcohol, there are prohibitions on public drunken-ness, drinking and driving, drunken brawls, etc.

I for one will celebrate this victory for freedom by having a craft brew from Mississippi’s only brewery: Lazy Magnolia.

So much for conservatives advocating for smaller, less intrusive, and less powerful government. This issue is the perfect example of why it is so important to fight against the theocracy that so many in the religious right are trying to force on us all. Not content to abstain themselves, they wish to make it law (federal at that) to make all of us conform to their religious proscriptions. No sir. We, the lovers of liberty, will not allow that.
